WHY CLEAN REUSABLE BAGS THOROUGHLY?

These bags get a lot of use, from storing produce to carrying leftovers, so they can trap food bits and bacteria. A good cleaning keeps them safe for your food and helps them last longer.

STEP-BY-STEP: CLEANING

1. Rinse Right After Use

Even if you don’t have time for a full wash, rinse the bag with warm water. This loosens up any food bits and makes deep cleaning easier later.

2. Use a Plant-based Dishwashing Soap and Warm Water

Just few drops of any gentle soap dish soap and warm water.  I prefer to use plant-based ones but any gentle soap will do. I don’t recommend using harsh soaps since this can wear down the bag’s material over time.

3. Use a Soft Sponge or Brush

Gently brush the bag and remember to place close attention to the corners and any seams where food tends to collect.

4. Rinse Well

Make sure there’s no soap left—residue can trap bacteria and impact the taste of your food.

5. Air Dry Thoroughly

Let bags air dry completely before storing. Hang them open or lay them flat, so moisture doesn’t get trapped, which can lead to mold.

OPTIONAL: MONTHLY DEEP CLEAN

Once a month, soak the bags in water with a little white vinegar. This helps kill bacteria and freshens up any lingering smells.

STORING YOUR BAGS

Once they’re fully dry, store them in a cool, dry spot. A breathable container is best since it keeps moisture from building up.

WHEN TO REPLACE THEM

If you some holes, tears, or stubborn odors that won’t go away, it’s time to replace them.

I’ve had my food baggies for years thanks to the extra care I give them. I know…disposable ones are more convenient. However, they can quickly become costly and aren’t really environmentally friendly. Hopefully, these tips will help keep your reusable bags in great shape so you can enjoy use them longer.

XO,
Julie
